Two threshold points worth confirming before you file. Venue under 750 ILCS 5/104 is the county where either party resides, so Cook County is proper if you live in Park Ridge. And under 750 ILCS 5/401, a judgment of dissolution requires 90 days of Illinois residency (or military presence) before judgment. If one of you recently moved out of state, that timing is worth sorting out at the start rather than at the end.

What Cook County will require of you

Parenting education. Cook County's court-approved program is Focus on Children, required of litigating parents in dissolution and parentage cases under 750 ILCS 5/404.1 and Illinois Supreme Court Rule 924. It is a four-hour in-person class, with Spanish sessions twice a month and interpreters by arrangement; there is an online alternative, Children In Between Online. Mediation. Mediation is mandatory for initial allocation of parental responsibilities, modification of allocation, relocation, and non-parent visitation. It is discretionary for financial and discovery disputes. If you and the other parent cannot agree on a mediator for a child-related dispute, Family Court Services handles it; otherwise you may use a court-certified or agreed private mediator. A parenting plan. Under 750 ILCS 5/602.10, a parenting plan is due within 120 days after service or filing. That clock starts whether or not you feel ready, so it is worth drafting your proposal early. The plan covers significant decision-making under 750 ILCS 5/602.5 and parenting time under 750 ILCS 5/602.7. If safety is the issue, 750 ILCS 5/603.10 governs restriction of parental responsibilities on a finding of serious endangerment. If a move is on the table, 750 ILCS 5/609.2 sets the relocation thresholds, including more than 25 miles from Cook County.

Financial disclosure. Property is divided under 750 ILCS 5/503, maintenance is addressed under 750 ILCS 5/504 including the guideline formula at 504(b-1), and child support follows the income shares approach at 750 ILCS 5/505. All three depend on a complete picture of income, accounts, and assets. Start pulling statements, tax returns, and pay records now; it is the single thing that most often slows a case down. Later changes to support or to an allocation judgment run through 750 ILCS 5/510.
