Berwyn Divorce & Family Law Attorney
Where is a Berwyn family-law case heard, and what does the court require?
Where a Berwyn case is heard
Berwyn is in Cook County, and a Berwyn resident has two filing locations for a domestic relations case. The suburban option is the Maywood Courthouse (Fourth Municipal District), 1500 Maybrook Dr., Maywood, IL 60153, phone (708) 865-6040, open 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Domestic relations cases are heard there. The Fourth Municipal District also serves Bellwood, Broadview, Brookfield, Cicero, Elmwood Park, Forest Park, Franklin Park, Hillside, La Grange Park, Maywood, Melrose Park, Oak Park, River Forest, Riverside and Westchester.
The downtown option remains available. The Domestic Relations Division of the Circuit Court of Cook County sits at the Richard J. Daley Center, 50 W. Washington St., Chicago, IL 60602. The presiding judge's courtroom is 1905 and the clerk's Domestic Relations office is Room 802. The division's phone is (312) 603-3025; the clerk's number is (312) 603-6441.
Venue in a dissolution case is the county where either party resides (750 ILCS 5/104). Before a judgment of dissolution can be entered, one spouse must have been an Illinois resident (or present in the state on military duty) for 90 days (750 ILCS 5/401). If you are weighing Maywood against the Daley Center, think about where each party works, who will be appearing, and whether either of you will be traveling to court on short notice for a motion.
What Cook County requires of parents
Parenting education. Cook County's court-approved program is Focus on Children, required of litigating parents in dissolution and parentage cases under 750 ILCS 5/404.1 and Illinois Supreme Court Rule 924. It is a four-hour in-person class, with Spanish sessions twice a month and interpreters by arrangement; there is an online alternative, Children In Between Online. The cost is $50 unless waived by the judge. Register through Family Court Services at (312) 603-1540 or DRD.family@cookcountyil.gov, with a copy of the court order. See the parent education page.
Mediation. Mediation is mandatory in Cook County for initial allocation of parental responsibilities, modification of allocation, relocation, and non-parent visitation. It is discretionary for financial and discovery disputes. When parents cannot agree on a mediator for a child-related dispute, Family Court Services provides mediation; otherwise you may use a court-certified or agreed private mediator. The contact number is (312) 603-1540. Illinois Supreme Court Rule 905 governs the county's mediation program for these cases. See the mediation program page.
Parenting plan. Each parent files a proposed parenting plan within 120 days after service or filing (750 ILCS 5/602.10). The plan is where decision-making responsibility (750 ILCS 5/602.5) and parenting time (750 ILCS 5/602.7) are set out. If a move is contemplated, relocation has its own standard and distance thresholds under 750 ILCS 5/609.2 — for a Cook County household, more than 25 miles, or 25 miles out of state.
Financial disclosure and interim relief. Property is divided under 750 ILCS 5/503, maintenance is decided under 750 ILCS 5/504 with the guideline formula at 504(b-1), and child support follows the income shares method at 750 ILCS 5/505. While the case is pending, you can ask for temporary relief under 750 ILCS 5/501, including temporary support and exclusive possession of the marital residence under 501(c-2), and for a temporary allocation of parental responsibilities under 750 ILCS 5/603.5. After judgment, support and allocation judgments can be modified under 750 ILCS 5/510.
Safety. Where a child is seriously endangered, 750 ILCS 5/603.10 allows restrictions on parental responsibilities. Orders of protection carry the remedies listed at 750 ILCS 60/214, and an emergency order can be entered without prior notice under 750 ILCS 60/217.

Working with this office
Jonathan D. Steele practices at Beermann LLP, 161 N. Clark St., Suite 3000, Chicago, IL 60601, phone (312) 621-4394. The work covers divorce, allocation of parental responsibilities and parenting time, child support and maintenance, orders of protection, and post-decree enforcement, with particular experience in cases that turn on financial records and digital evidence — concealed assets and crypto, message and parenting-app records, spyware and account intrusions. He holds cybersecurity credentials (CompTIA Security+, ISC2 CC, EC-Council CEH).
To start: complete the short online form. The office then runs a conflict check and calls you back, and you can book a 15-minute screening call online. That call is for sorting out whether your situation fits this practice and what the next step is — not a substitute for full advice.
Before the call, gather what you already have: recent pay records, tax returns, account statements, any existing court order, and the dates of any filings or service. If there are parenting-app or message records you think matter, note where they live and whether you can export them without altering them.
